Yoga says that it’s not only important what to eat, you need to consider the time of eating and the right attitude.
So, what is the right timing for having the meal? Should we watch the clock or just eat whenever we’re hungry?
Well, if you start your practice at the sunrise, you can have your breakfast after you are done – probably around 8am. Then it’s recommended to eat every four hours and have some snacks (sattvic, of course) between your lunch and dinner. This kind of long break between meals will give you the light feeling of hunger and will let your stomach finish processing previous meal before having the new one. In perfect case the last food intake should be at least three hours prior your bed time – so the body can concentrate it power on rest and recovery and not on digesting the big supper. Actually, the best thing is to avoid the big suppers at all – the most nutritious meal of the day is lunch.
Have you ever realized that you don’t remember what you had eaten just now? Could not remember the taste of the food and could say that you had a meal only by the feeling in stomach? That is not how we do it in Yoga way! Keep your mind on whatever you are doing, and while eating especially. This process gives you energy to sustain your physical body, discover, explore and well, just live! Looks important enough to concentrate on it for me!
So, it’s recommended to eat in silence and actually do not do anything else (well, you should breathe of course) while you’re eating – no TV, chitchats, reading etc. Try to concentrate on the food as much as possible – feel its taste, smell, texture, temperature… well, anything you can feel about the food. From my own experience, I can say it’s the best and the tastiest way to have a meal!
